Few handy things. My mother is a personal trainer, so a few things have rubbed off :D
1) You can’t spot-reduce, all you can do is build up the strength and…
I would also like to add that weight loss is like 80% diet and 20% exercise. You can’t eat like crap and expect to lose weight.
MyFitnessPal is a great place to count calories, look at what types of things you’re eating, and analyze nutrient intake. PROTEIN is important, cut carbs where you can, and make sure you’re getting your veggies. Also, try to avoid fats, sodium, preservatives, etc.
To a degree, certainly. It does depend on what you were eating beforehand as to whether that applies. If the person in question is OM NOM NOMing white bread, sugar, refined carbs, oily crap and general shit all day then it’s definitely down to diet to change things.
A lot of ciswomen pretty much ruin their bodies believing that their diets - either bizarre fads that can result in actual physical harm, or simply limiting their calorie intake to the bottom of the sensible range. It’s a risky business.
What’s best is to normalise your intake, rather than cut cut cut; natural, unrefined products are a plus, keeping in mind that one needs protein in a lean form with pretty much every meal. The body requires nutrients, vitamins, minerals as well as a certain calorie intake; a lot of good things are hidden in ‘bad’ foods, which is why it’s crazy talk to simply slice food groups out as a lot of people often do when trying to lose weight.
For example, bread contains B-vitamins, folate and a whole host of other important vitamins and minerals. Doesn’t mean you should NAAAARM down on a whole loaf; it means that a slice of wholegrain toast in the morning with your coffee and perhaps an egg is going to give you a boost of goodness.
Calorie intake is very much related to the individual and their environment also; people living in colder climates and actually having to deal with the temperatures (ie: not sitting in a toasty office all day) need more calories. If you’re trekking to the North Pole, you need 5000 calories a day. If you’re sitting on your bum in an office all summer, you need more like 1500.
The ultimate answer is input vs output; if you’re putting in too much vs your exercise regime, then you’ll store those calories as fat. If you eat 2000 calories, for example, but go on an hour’s blitz daily, the deficit will result in healthy weight loss.
I talk about this only because I was weight training for a while, and basically getting raped in the face by not eating properly. Being weak and fatigued because you’re not eating enough is a bitch; I upped protein in as many ways as I could, and SUDDENLY, BICEPS.
The best thing to do is talk to a professional rather than using a generic online guide; every physical body is different, every environment and exercise regime is different, and a person’s routine needs to be optimised toward their needs. For losing weight I know what I need to eat less of - sadly that means ignoring the coffee + free muffin deal in the morning and just taking the coffee, eat muesli instead.
TL;DR: yes sir it certainly is about diet, in a big way. But it’s a slippery beast, and it’s best to consult a nutritionist (NOT a doctor, they don’t know shit about nutrition) for optimal results.
